Introduction
As part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act, Companies House is introducing mandatory identity verification for company directors and Persons with
Significant Control (PSCs).
This change is designed to improve transparency and prevent the misuse of UK companies for fraudulent activities.
In this guide, we explain how directors can verify their identity with Companies House step by step.
Step 1: Prepare Your Identification Documents
To verify your identity, you will need a valid identification document such as:
Passport
UK driving licence
National identity card (for some countries)
You may also be asked to confirm your address details.
Step 2: Choose the Verification Method
There are two main ways to complete identity verification:
Option 1 – Directly through Companies House
Directors can verify their identity through the official Companies House digital system.
Option 2 – Through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP)
Alternatively, directors can verify their identity through an ACSP, such as an accountant or solicitor authorised by Companies House.
Step 3: Complete the Digital Verification Process
The verification process may include:
Uploading identification documents
Confirming personal details
Completing a digital identity check
Once verified, your identity will be registered with Companies House.
Step 4: Confirmation of Verification
After successful verification:
Your identity will be confirmed on the Companies House system
You will be authorised to act as a director or PSC
You will be able to submit company filings
